Subutex versus Suboxone

June 22, 2015

Subutex is prescribed for the first week or two of treatment. The patient will then be switched over to Suboxone tablets or Suboxone film. The reason why this is done is because Suboxone contains an extra medication component called Naltrexone (which can worsen withdrawal symptoms if it is used within the first week of coming off of other opioids.) For this reason, Buprenorphine without Naltrexone (Suboxone) is used until all of the opioids have been cleared from the client’s system.
